Should my child skip Building Number Town?
Consider skipping Building Number Town if your child already...

  • Knows all the major flat and 3D shapes (square, rectangle, circle, triangle, hexagon, star, sphere, cube, cube, etc)
  • Fully Understands their numbers 1-10
    • They can count 1-10
    • Recognizes 0-10
    • Demonstrates 1:1 Correspondence (understands that 3 means 1, 2, 3)
    • Can break groups into parts (five acorns can be broken up into 2 and 3)
  • Can compare quantities using words like same, different, equal, more, and less

Is my child ready for Building Number Town?
Your child is ready to start Building Number Town if they...
  • Are able to have back and forth conversations with you
  • Understand how to play simple games
If your child is younger than four
  • Expect to do the activities multiple times and do not expect mastery
  • They might not be ready for the fine motor activities. Leave those out until they are ready for them.

What if we start and my child doesn’t like it?
Sometimes resistance is a child saying they’re not ready. It’s okay to take things at their pace, or even stop completely.

My kid HATES coloring!
It’s okay to skip the coloring parts!
I would recommend cutting out some additional shapes and letting them arrange those instead.

What if my child can’t write the numbers?
It’s okay to be their scribe and write the numbers for them. Math time doesn’t need to be handwriting time.

What if I can’t get one of the supplies or one of the books?

Get what you are able or what works for your family. I try to always include a DIY version of the math manipulatives, but you can absolutely do this unit without any of them. You could get a cheap pack of construction paper, scissors, and gluesticks from dollar tree and be perfectly fine.

I love books and will always recommend some in each project. None of them are ever required.

What’s with the “Rabbit Holes” sections? What does Frida Kahlo have to do with MATH?
The "Rabbit Holes" are cross curricular things you could add to the curriculum. They are fun topics to explore if you have the time and the desire. If it sparks an interest and you end up engaged in the study of stars for a few days, thats amazing!
